Thesis Statement: City Space as Play Space

In today’s digital age, modern technologies have provided various alternate modes of engagement that satisfy our need for play. These technologies, such as television, computers, social networking, and video games were developed as enhanced, exaggerated, or expanded versions of everyday life. Although these media technologies provide non-goal oriented engagement for adults, they are static and location dependent. By investigating the spatial, visual, social and perceptive qualities that these technologies offer and translating them back into the realm of reality, architecture can become interactive through these applications as enhanced, exaggerated, and expanded versions of the digital play spaces we immerse ourselves in. This new architecture can exist as the play space for adults, and implanting this interactive architecture as a sequence of spaces into an urban context will allow physical activity, mental engagement, and visual stimulation to become an active part of everyday life.

Programmatic Criteria: Participation spaces connected and formed within an urban realm

1. Promotion of maximum involvement

2. Situated within an urban realm

3. Site(s) needs a simultaneous macro and micro scale

4. Spaces formed by the boundaries of adjacent buildings and/or roads

5. Spaces can connect to create a sequence

6. The sequence requires a beginning and an ending site

7. Naturally occurring obstacles and urban phenomena become part of game

8. Sites need to be a range of different sizes to allow for different program

Selected Site: Seattle

How does the Selected Site meet Programmatic Criteria:

1. Promotion of maximum involvement: Selected Site sequence weaves within the city, allowing users to participate randomly at will or follow the sequence in its entirety

2. Situated within an urban realm: Seattle has a dense urban core which sprawls parallel to the coastline

3. Site(s) needs a simultaneous macro and micro scale: Seattle acts as the macro scale of the game spaces, while the individual sites along the sequence are the micro scale

4. Spaces formed by the boundaries of adjacent buildings and/or roads: Many of the chosen sites are bounded by buildings on three sides and a street on the fourth, few are bounded by streets alone

5. Spaces can connect to create a sequence: Spaces are connected by a chosen sequence

6. The sequence requires a beginning and an ending site: The sequence has a chosen beginning and ending, on what are considered the two ends of the dense urban realm of Seattle

7. Naturally occurring obstacles and urban phenomena become part of game: The Alaskan Way Viaduct, the City Monorail, light rail, Seattle bus lines, grade change, and tendency for inclement weather each act as phenomena along the sequence of game spaces

8. Sites need to be a range of different sizes to allow for different program: The chosen sites’ footprints range in size from 25,000 square feet to 330,000 square feet, allowing the different programs to be accommodated for

City Space as Game Space

Seattle was chosen based on the fact that it is a younger city, about 150 years old. Because the city is still expanding and being developed there are many opportunities for remediation on current empty sites. Seattle is also a dynamic urban landscape because of the extreme change in elevation and two highways that divide the city in half.

START: Pioneer Square, the site of the first settlement in the city limits now known as Seattle, previously called New York Alki.

END: Seattle Center, the last portion of the city considered within the densely urban realm.

Distance between the two spaces when navigating sequence: 3.21 miles.

The path between these two 'ends' of the dense urban realm are often randomly navigated by tourists and Seattleites on foot; this path can be transformed by allowing empty lots and newer urban interventions to become game space, creating a link between the two most heavily visited extents of the city.

The sites range in size and shape, allowing different program sizes to be accommodated for.

They interviewed over 50,000 people over 48 countries to come up with the data, and the website allows you to enter into an interactive mode where you can browse the data. You can filter the data by device, age, and activity.

There is a problem in American culture in terms of playtime. Children have opportunities to interact and play, exposing them to visual stimulation at a young age. This allows their imaginations to develop and enhances learning. Currently, the need for visual stimulation as adults is fulfilled by developing and changing technologies: television, computers, video games, and the Internet, all of which are present within the home. This has become our playtime.

Starting the technology that sparked the digital age, the television was invented in 1928. True introduction to American culture came in 1948, when commercial programming was developed after the war ended. The room with the television now served as a place for family gathering, social interaction, and everyday entertainment. The parlor became the television room, and the use of the home adapted to focus around the television. The introduction of computers and video games in the 1980’s and the Internet in the 1990’s proved the house as a typology would now be forever changed. From this point forward, the home was now acting as a place in which play and interaction would occur. Subsequently, the architecture of the home became less of a priority and more of a backdrop to the technologies of the digital age.

The question now becomes, can the architecture of the home be the root of the play itself, joining together program, social and cultural needs, and digital technologies in order to satisfy our visual stimulation needs?

Things I can't live without: things I am obsessed with: things that I love.

This blog is a collection of the things that I love, that I am often obsessed with, but most of the time visually stimulated by.

When something directly relates to the thesis topic I am generally interested in, I will make note of it.

In the meantime, I would like to clarify that I do not love explosions, I love when things explode (volcanoes) and people take pictures of them and they show up all over the internet.

I found this hilarity on notcot.org today.

Artist Helmut Smits burned a 82 x 82cm square into a grassy lawn, which is the size of one pixel from an altitude of 1km.

So, on Google Earth, it will be a dead pixel! I love this!
